Dr. Joon Lee is a co-lead of the Health Data Science Lab and an Assistant Professor in the School of Public Health and Health Systems at the University of Waterloo. He is cross-appointed with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science. He received a BASc degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, and a PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Toronto under the supervision of Drs. Tom Chau and Catriona Steele. His PhD thesis work resulted in an abnormal swallow detection algorithm that processes and analyzes non-invasive accelerometric and respiratory signals.
Dr. Lee also completed a 3-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Medical Informatics in the Laboratory for Computational Physiology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, under the supervision of Dr. Roger Mark. His research primarily involved mining intensive care data in the MIMIC-II database for knowledge discovery and predictive algorithm development.
Dr. Lee currently teaches health informatics courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. His research interests include health data science, health informatics, data-driven decision support algorithms, machine learning, statistical inference, intensive care, and public health.
Dr. Lee’s list of publications is available on his Google Scholar page.
